Cosmic Book Review: No Matter What You Call It, It's Still New Age

By Ann Ulrich Miller

From the September 2009 Star Beacon

.....In Unfinished Evolution, Booth says that reviving the New Age movement would enable spiritual progressives to join together under a common identity and allow them to tap into the power of their numbers when addressing threats to the future, such as nuclear war. “The only way to save ourselves from global warming and the other effects of a failing value system is through the concerted efforts of a holistic-minded community, like the New Age once was and could be again,” she says. “I have three kids, and it upsets me that they’re growing up surrounded by dread over economic collapse and environmental disaster....”

I commend Teena Booth for her warrior spirit in writing a thought-provoking book for the “non-traditional,” label-averse spiritual types who just might discover there is good reason to take on a label after all.

The book contains excerpts from blog entries, a section on philosophy outlines of the basic precepts of New Age thinking, as well as a section on politics, a quiz, a “map of spiritual growth,” lists of books, Web sites and even the top 10 movies that Booth says express a New Age point of view.

I, for one, am not ashamed to be known as a “New Ager.” Some time ago I adopted the philosophy that it’s really none of my business what other people think of me. Whether you agree with Booth or not, the book puts things into a new perspective.

A New Age Revival On Its Way

by Elihu Edelson

From Both Sides Now: A Journal for Lightworking, Peacemaking and Consciousness

With the intention is to jump-start a New Age revival, Teena Booth has embarked on an ambitious undertaking… Her book is a solid 332-pitch for a revival of the New Age movement. Its thoroughness is a great plus. She first tackles whether the New Age label is still relevant. As she notes in detail (she has a great way of covering every issue she brings up in detail), the term New Age had so many cultish and commercial associations that it left a bad taste in the mouths and minds of many.

Indeed, a number of authentic New Age entities made such a point of dissociating themselves from the label that they often came up with new ones. For example, Marianne Williamson pulled together a number of leading figures under the label Global Renaissance Alliance. It is still around, but has a low profile. A search on it in the web found demonizing of it from the religious right. Of course the New Age movement incurred a lot of demonizing when it was at its peak.

In the face of all this, Booth has taken great pains to describe and define an authentic New Age.  It is apparent that she has done her homework. Even people who have long been into the New Age concept, including myself, can learn a thing or two here...

Booth points out that it’s time to stop wallowing in our safe domains and get out into the world, precisely because the world needs us.  I agree that New Agers need to get more politically involved.  Being nonpolitical only allows negative forces to run the show and make the rules. Earth and its inhabitants have suffered for lack of dedicated activism on vital issues.  Booth motivates us to seize the moment for moving forward toward the realization of our ideals. She does not just throw out ideas, but provides numerous suggestions and resources for further study and action…

At Both Sides Now, we are watching the signs, and we are seeing a number of indicators that a new wave of New Age manifestations is in the works. Booth’s book is one of these, its appearance is most timely.  She is catching the wave… and deserves all the support she can get.  Her deliciously-written book can’t be recommended more highly. Everyone who wishes to see a re-newed New Age movement should have a copy.
