That the New Age exists at all is due almost entirely to its body of literature.  In aggressive Western culture, the philosophies of materialism and dualism are propagated by schools and churches, but the only way to learn about idealism is to carry it home from a book store or library.  Likewise, the only way to communicate it to another is by sharing a favorite book or author.

Essential Reading for the New Age

From Emerson and Thoreau to Watts and Wilber, these authors are the most wise, the most eloquent, and the most important translators of New Age-style idealism available on the bookshelf today.

New Age Classics

Idealists have embraced a number of books and made them phenomenonal bestsellers.  From older books like The Prophet and newer books like Conversations with God, these are the books that have stayed in print for decades or been made bestsellers by New Age readers.

Spotlight On:

The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering

Sharon Mehdi

This whimsical  “children’s story for grownups” about peace-making can be read in about ten minutes, but will stick with you far longer.  A phenomenon when it first came out in 2006, it had me and tens of thousands of others standing in local parks for peace throughout the next year.  When I felt helpless to express my opposition to the war in a respectful, non-confrontational way, this book charmingly and gently showed me how one person can make a difference, and start a movement, by simply standing for what is right.

The Family Heart

Robb Forman Dew

Published over a decade ago, this book still rates a spotlight for its fearless account of a woman coming to terms with the fact that simply being a “good person” is not enough.  When her 19-year-old son came out as a homosexual, Dew -- a true blue liberal -- was shocked at how it turned her life, and her family, upside down.  And devastated to realize how little she had done throughout her life to confront the dangerous prejudice that her child now confronted. She shows us how we are all lulled by our culture into complacency about injustice, and lets us keenly feel that if we let prejudice pass unremarked, we become responsible for perpetuating it.  Beautifully written, and one of the most emotional and eye-opening books I’ve ever read.
