What will happen in 2012 ?

Much ado about something -- Teena, Phoenix, AZ

The hype over 2012 as the "end of the world" first struck me as mostly ridiculous.  There have been hundreds of prophecies like this throughout history, and they always turn out to be much ado about nothing.  I believe that the most important time is now.  And where we will be in 2012 is dependent on what we do now.  So in that way, I think the 2012 obsession can lead us to ask good questions.  Where do we want to be as a society in a few years?  With climate change certain to be making itself felt more and more as we approach 2012, maybe we can make that year an important tipping point toward something new and better for our children.  Thus, in the sense of prodding us toward self-examination, I say, bring on the hype.  Then again, if it causes too many people to believe we have no choice in what happens, that we should just horde food in expectation of calamity instead of doing to something to avert it, then the belief in 2012 is in itself the disaster.

Bad news and  good news-- Elihu, Tyler, TX

Although the Age of Aquarius (and thus a new "age") does not begin until 2062, a newer concept has recently entered the picture-- the Mayan calendar.  This new age is supposed to commence in 2012, only three years away.  The problem is that the Old World Order is still very much in the saddle with its wars, destruction of the environment, extreme inequality between rich and poor, corrupt politics, etc. The good news is that those who understand the nature if cycles are aware that time itself is accelerating and as a number of keen observers (like Carolyn Baker) are observing, we are headed toward collapse. This will be caused by a collection of factors including end of the fossil fuel era, the flimsy foundation of our economies, and the planet Gaia herself rebelling against the abuses she has suffered. The good news is that this would bring about the fall of the Old Order just mentioned and make way for the Builders of a New Dawn—New Agers, cultural creatives, indigos—whatever we wind up calling them (or ourselves).

Nothing to Worry About--Gail, Phoenix, AZ

I'm often told I have a Pollyanna attitude.  That doesn't allow for any worry about 2012. I just don't believe it.  My mind will not accept any such thoughts.  I'd rather use my energy toward urging progress in the caring for, and changing our government as well as promoting changes in other governments for, the equality, safety and health of the world.

2012 is NOT New Age--Dena, AZ

The end of the world is a hot topic.  Go to your bookstore and you’ll see book after book on the 2012 prophecies, and come November, Hollywood is bringing the sensational theories to the big screen.  New Age types have embraced the 2012 movement, but 2012 is NOT New Age.

The New Age is all about living in the present.  The 2012 movement asks us to devote our time and energy to worrying about a myth that the world is going to end soon.  A true New Ager would dismiss the fear of 2012 and instead focus that time and energy on the present.  It’s 2009, and the world is in an economic recession, wars and conflicts are happening worldwide, and  poverty is still widespread.  A New Ager should focus on our current problems and leave the fear mongering to Hollywood.
